After 38 years working as fine wine director/wine consultant for a Vermont distributor/importer, John is now available to work for you.
For suppliers—wine producers, importers—We are now offering a full range of services including representation, compliance, and logistics in Vermont, Maine, and Puerto Rico--all at a fraction of the cost of setting yourself up in those markets. We take care of everything. We will be expanding this concept into additional markets soon.
We currently represent:
“A great trip to Vermont to celebrate the retirement of John Fagan. The word 'legend' was used only a few times...” – Morgan Twain-Peterson MW, Bedrock Wine Co.
“I'm writing about the man who represents my wines in Vermont. He’s an old buddy who I am just really getting to know…I had never been to his house before, or seen his cellar, or eaten his cooking and all three just blew me away.
John Fagan worked for a wholesaler in Vermont for 30+ years. He brought them a plethora of amazing West Coast producers, collected their wines and has a cellar full of greatness. He invited me to his home on a hill above Waterbury for dinner…In his 67 years he has been a professional musician, carpenter, wine merchant, gardener &c. There aren’t many renaissance people left. John is one of them.
A monumentally great dinner offered by a wonderful friend.” – Dan Kravitz, Founder/CEO Hand Picked Selections
"I have known John Fagan for many years, and he is a great friend. Due to the pandemic, I was unable to return to Vermont while selling my home in Stowe. I asked John to take all my wine cellar with very good wines and help me sell them. It was a wonderful experience. John took my wines as his own and stored them in his cellar. There he studied and gave a value to the bottles and later sold them to collectors who appreciate good wines. I highly recommend his work and honesty. My name is Manelick de la Parra and my email is firstname.lastname@example.org* if you need more information." - Manelick de la Parra, Singer/ Actor (*email available on request)
“We were in a pickle! Moving to West Coast with a cellar full of wine here in Stowe. Couldn’t bring it all with us. John to the rescue! Efficiently and professionally, he assisted us in disbursing the cellar and we now have enough money to start filling our new one. It was totally amazing, and we got to drink great bottles of old Oregon Pinot! He is exceptional!” - Rodger Kessler PhD
“I dare say, in my tenure here at National Distributors I have never experienced so much collective excitement around a domestic portfolio as I experienced last night during John's presentation. Thank you, Mr. Fagan, for your bedrock sensibilities.”- Brendan Robb, Fine Wine Sales Manager, National Distributors, South Portland, Maine, regarding the presentation I did for his sales force.
Hand Picked Selections, Regional Manager
I am also a Regional Manager for Hand Picked Selections
Founded by Dan Kravitz in 1985, Hand Picked Selections is a national importer of wines from France, Spain, Italy and Argentina. Dan started the company with a focus on the red wines of Bordeaux, but quickly recognized the untapped potential for quality in Southern France. HPS went on to build a pioneering stable of benchmark growers from the Southern Rhône Valley, Provence, Roussillon and Languedoc, and over time, gained a reputation for its incredible values —superlative wines loaded with character and personality—that often tasted like they could easily cost two or three times their actual price.
The company has grown substantially over the past three decades, and now has a national footprint with a strong distribution network in more than 45 states. The portfolio has also grown to include wines from other French regions, Spain, Italy, and Argentina. In 2007, Dan purchased his own vineyard, Domaine Cabirau, in the small village of Maury (Roussillon).
Though HPS has come a long way since Dan started the company as a small, home-based business, our commitment to working closely with artisan growers to source consistently characterful, balanced, and food-friendly wines has remained unchanged. We invite you to join us for a glass.
“Kravitz is one of the best at finding terrific values that often sell for 10, 11, 12 dollars a bottle. It’s hard to believe!” – Robert M. Parker Jr.
“I’ve been tasting the wines from Kravitz for over a decade and these wines consistently deliver reliable quality at rock solid prices. While there are plenty of highly rated wines in this report, the true strength of Dan’s portfolio is the plethora of high-quality, reasonably priced wines that satisfy both the palate and the wallet.” – Jeb Dunnuck
Personal Wine Concierge
While I have long helped hotels and restaurants deal with no longer needed wine inventory and acquisition of more appropriate goods, lately I’ve been called upon to provide my services for private collectors and new wine enthusiasts. Here are a few things I can do:
Cellar Liquidation: A client wishes to sell part or all of his collection in a legal, discreet, and hassle-free manner. Until recently the client would have to pay for temperature-controlled shipping to the one of the traditional auction houses that sell, art, real estate, antiques, wine, etc. The auction house would then provide an estimate of what the wine might sell for at an auction sometime in the future. High Estimates are never guaranteed and rarely achieved but often trap collectors with unrealistic expectations. In contrast, I inspect and catalogue the wines in place and provide a realistic estimate. If the client agrees, I then arrange free shipping to my associates who, after a final inspection make a firm offer to the client. If he agrees, the funds are wired within 72 hours. No waiting for the wine to be auctioned. And the client usually gets a much better price for the wines.
Cellar Rebalancing: Our tastes and lifestyles change over time. Those King Kong California Cabernets you bought 10 years ago because a certain wine critic gave them high scores might no longer match with the way you eat or entertain. I can arrange for those wines to be exchanged for more appropriate wines of elegance and complexity like mature Barolo, Burgundy and Champagne.
Wine Acquisition: It is not easy to acquire classic, mature wines here in Vermont. I’m associated with the top reseller of fine wines in the US and can fill an empty wine cellar or wine fridge with wines that suit the client’s tastes and budget. I then set the collection up in Cellar Tracker for which I was a beta tester 25 years ago.
Wine Tastings, Themed Wine Dinners: I can host fun and informative wine tastings and wine themed dinners for you and your friends, associates, or clients, using my wine or yours.
Please let me know what I can do for you.
